A Bouquet of Art Nouveau Flowers

In the late 19th century,  the Victorians began to celebrate natural themes  -  flowers,  stars,  bugs and critters  -  in their jewelry.  But it was the jewelers of the Art Nouveau period  (1890 to 1910)  who perfected the creation of small,  life-like flowers in enamel and gold.  Below is a small bouquet of these extraordinary Art Nouveau flowers.

An Art Nouveau flower stickpin. (J3502)
A striking Art Nouveau stickpin to adorn your favorite scarf,  jacket lapel or hat.  The artistry of the enameler is evident in the shading of the purple petals and the hint of golden pollen in the center of the flower.  Of course,  as always,  there is a pearl set in the center of the flower.  The petals and pin stem are meticulously crafted in 15kt gold.

Cost:   Sold

Measurements:   This beautiful stickpin is 2.5" long.   The flower is 0.625" high and 0.5" wide.

This intricate flower brooch evidences several common Art Nouveau motifs  -  the free-form of the flower's stem as it entwines itself around the jewel's navette-shape frame,  the realism of the gently shaded petals,  and the center pearl.   Each of these elements helps us place this small brooch in the Art Nouveau period.

Crafted of 10kt gold,  the jewel's navette-shape frame helps to protect the enamel petals and delicate gold work

Measurements:   This lovely flower brooch is 1.0" long and 0.5" wide.

This diminutive brooch features a flower with five petals and a center pearl.  The beautiful soft pastel shades of the enameled petals and the sensuous,  free-form curve of the stem are characteristic of the Art Nouveau period.  This jewel was meticulously crafted in 14kt gold.

Measurements:   This life-like flower brooch is 0.75" long.

If you have visited our Jewelry Gallery before,  you know that we won't let you get away without first taking a look at the back of these beautiful jewels.  From the rear you can see the attention to detail that the goldsmith took in creating these miniature flowers.  Note the finished quality and thickness of the metal work supporting the petals:  this helps protect the petals from being bent and the enamels damaged.

Although these flowers, created of gold and enamel, appear to be as fine and delicate as the flowers in your favorite garden, the goldsmiths of the Art Nouveau era took the time to create jewels that would last through time.   They look pretty good after nearly 100 years.
