Egyptian Revival Cufflinks

Art Deco Egyptian Revival cufflinks. (J9228)

Maze of the Pharaohs!

The discovery of King Tut's tomb in the early 1920s sparked a fascination with the arts and artifacts of ancient Egypt.  The subsequent wave of Egyptomania found expression in objects ranging from the smallest jewels to palatial movie theaters.

This elegant pair of Art Deco cufflinks is fit for a pharaoh.  A border of stylized lotus blossoms and reed-like bundles suggestive of papyrus stands surrounds a maze-like swirl of concentric circles in the centers.  The design is evocative of a maze in a pharaoh's garden or, perhaps, the rippling water in a lagoon along the Nile after a pebble has been dropped in.  Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1925.

The backs of these cufflinks are as well crafted as the fronts with solid cross bars and sturdy strap brackets to secure the cufflinks on the cuff.  Also note the smooth, polished surfaces and softly rounded, even edges, small details that show the care the maker took in creating these cufflinks.

The cross bars are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold followed by the maker's mark of Bippart, Griscom & Osborn - a flaming torch lying horizontally.  Bippart, Griscom & Osborn was a maker of fine gold cufflinks and other jewels during the late 19th century and early decades of the 20th century.
