Dragon and Diamond

Carrington dragon with diamond stickpin. (J9439)
A greedy dragon clutches an oversized diamond in its outstretched maw.  The beautiful sculpting and fine details of this miniature chimera reflect the artistry and skill of jewelers in the past.  This elegant stickpin was created by Carrington & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

Carrington & Co. was a maker of elegant cufflinks, stickpins and fine gentleman's accessories during the first half of the 20th century.  The firm was known for the elegance of its designs, meticulous craftsmanship and fine materials.  Carrington jewels were sold at Tiffany & Co. and other carriage-trade jewelers of the day.

The reverse of the stickpin (below) illustrates the care with which Carrington created its jewels.  Note the sturdy pin stem which attaches to the back of the dragon with a strong collar.   The maker's mark of Carrington & Co. (a boxy "C" enclosing "14") is stamped to the lower right of the collet securing the diamond.  The diamond is an Old European cut weighing approximately 1/4 carat.

Cost:  $785

Measurements:  The stickpin is  2 1/2" long and weighs 3.7 grams.  The dragon top is just under 5/8" tall by 3/4" wide.
