NYYC Reverse Intaglio Stickpin

NY Yacht Club burgee stickpin. (J9301)

NYYC Burgees Aloft!

A nautical stickpin featuring the burgee of the New York Yacht Club and the commodore's flag in a beautifully carved reverse intaglio.  Founded in 1844,  the New York Yacht Club listed among its commodores J. Pierpont Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt III and other luminaries of the Gilded Age.  This elegant stickpin was created by Carrington & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

A miniature masterpiece, the burgee and flag were carved into the reverse of a small, polished dome of rock crystal and then meticulously painted by a Victorian artist using brushes as fine as a single horse hair.

For a final touch of elegance,  the reverse of the rock crystal was backed with mother of pearl to give the scene a luminous, back lit quality.  The magnifying effect of the crystal dome and the fine details of the flags give the image a lifelike, three dimensional quality.

Name:  NYYC Burgees Aloft

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more beautiful stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

The reverse of the stickpin is as well crafted as the front.  The intaglio crystal and mother of pearl are protected with a gold back, while a sturdy pin stem secures the stickpin on a lapel or tie.  Just to the left of the pin stem is the partially hidden maker's mark of Carrington & Co. (a "C" enclosing "14").

Carrington & Co. was a maker of fine stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels during the early decades of the 1900s.  The firm, known for its elegant designs and impeccable craftsmanship, created jewels for Tiffany & Co. and other fine jewelers of the day.
