Art Nouveau Amethyst Stickpin

Art Nouveau amethyst stickpin (J9430).

Nouveau Fantasy

An elegant stickpin in the Art Nouveau taste of the early 1900s. The center amethyst is cut en cabochon and framed by beautifully detailed goldwork.  Created by Day, Clark & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

Art Nouveau jewels can be wonderfully evocative while remaining intriguingly ambiguous.  The top of this stickpin could be viewed as a large headed, singled eyed denizen of Saturn about to spring upward from a well executed pliť.  Or, perhaps, the jewel's design was inspired by the fantastic furniture creations of Carlo Bugatti in the years around 1900.  Others may see hints of classical antiquity.

The stickpin is well crafted with a solid gold back (photo below).  The maker's mark of Day, Clark & Company  (a profile of small barbell-style cufflink) is stamped on the upper inside of the pin stem along with "14" for the purity of the gold.  Day, Clark was a maker of elegant cufflinks, dress sets and other jewels from 1877 to the early 1930s.

Cost:  $525

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 7/8" long and weighs 1.8 grams.  The striking top is  5/8" tall and just over 5/8" wide.
