Art Nouveau Amethyst Stickpin

Art Nouveau amethyst stickpin (J9430).

Nouveau Fantasy

An elegant, fantasy-inspired stickpin in the Art Nouveau taste of the late 1800s.  The center amethyst is cut en cabochon and framed with finely detailed 14kt goldwork, circa 1900.

Art Nouveau jewels are often wonderfully evocative while remaining suggestively ambiguous.  The top of this stickpin could be a large headed, one-eyed space alien about to spring upward.  Or, perhaps, it is a classically inspired fantasy like the fin de siecle furniture creations of Carlo Bugatti.  It is for the wearer to decide!

This stickpin was created by Day, Clark & Company,  a maker of stickpins and other fine jewels from 1877 to about 1930.  The maker's mark of Day, Clark (a profile of small barbell-style cufflink) is stamped on the upper side of the pin stem along with "14" for the purity of the gold.  The back of the top is solid gold helping to protect the sapphire (photo below).

Cost:  $485

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 7/8" long and weighs 1.8 grams.  The striking top is  5/8" tall and just over 5/8" wide.
