Lion with Diamond Stickpin

Fierce lion with diamond stickpin. (J9467)

Fierce Lion

A lion fiercely grasps a diamond in his snarling maw while staring menacingly with fiery red eyes.  The lion is beautifully sculpted with a finely detailed mane and intensely watchful gaze.  Crafted in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

Jewelers since ancient times have delighted in creating golden menageries of exotic creatures and ferocious beasts.  Lions, tigers, griffins and  dragons have all populated small pins and other jewels since time immemorial.  This leonine stickpin with its fierce gaze is an especially fine example.

The reverse of the stickpin (photo below) is finely crafted with a haunting aspect all its own.  There is an obscured maker's mark stamped on the upper side of the pin stem.  The partial mark and crafting of the stickpin suggest it may be of Turkish or Middle Eastern origin.

Cost:  $475

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is  2 3/8" long and weighs 3.2 grams.  The regal lion measures just over  9/16" by  7/16".
