Gold and Blue Enamel Cufflinks

Larter & Sons cufflinks with garlands and blue enamel borders. (J9128)

Garland Blues!

Blue enamel accents, bright gold borders and pendant, swinging garlands surround radiant centers that explode like miniature golden fireworks.  These elegant cufflinks are clearly meant for celebration and joy, in spite of the blues.  Created in 14kt gold by Larter & Sons,  circa 1925.

Fine cufflinks should be as well crafted on the backs, as they are on the fronts.  With this pair the maker's attention to small details can be seen in the sturdy cross bars and strap brackets that secure these cufflinks on the cuff.  As an added touch of elegance the usually hidden cross bars are decorated with fine, flowing scroll work.

The maker's mark of Larter & Sons and a gold purity mark ("14K") are stamped on the cross bars.  The maker's mark is a stylized representation of a spring-loaded shirt stud invented by the Larter & Sons in the late 1800s.

At some point in the past 100 years, one of these cufflinks experienced some minor loss of enamel in one of the side panels.  A master enamelist has restored the cufflinks to their original beauty.

Larter & Sons was founded in 1865 and made distinctive cufflinks, dress sets and other gentlemen's jewelry during the late Victorian era and early decades of the last century.  The firm had offices in New York City and manufactured its jewelry across the Hudson River in Newark, New Jersey.  Larter & Sons was known for elegant design,  technical innovation and fine craftsmanship.
