Winged Serpent and Pearl Stickpin

Whiteside and Blank gargoyle stickpin. (J9446)

The Gargoyle

A winged serpent greedily clutches a small pearl while watching menacingly.  This charming little fellow is  the perfect personal gargoyle to keep demons and other malefactors from a wearer's tie or lapel.  Finely detailed and beautifully crafted in 14kt gold circa 1900.

Fin de siècle jewelers delighted in creating a menagerie of  fiery dragons, winged serpents, griffins, basilisks and other fantastic creatures.  The jewels of the era were as imaginatively populated as any Medieval bestiary.  This captivating stickpin is a particularly charming example.

The reverse (photo below) is also beautifully crafted.  Note the strong pin stem that attaches to the back of the serpent with a sturdy collet.  To the left of the pin stem "14k" is stamped for the purity of the gold.  This miniature work of sculpture is attributed to Whiteside & Blank, a maker of elegant stickpins and other jewels during the 1890s and into the early decades of the 20th century.

Cost:  $465

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 7/16" in length and weighs 2.5 grams.  The winged serpent is  5/8" tall and  7/16" wide.
