Victorian Watch in the Japonaiserie Style

Victorian silver watch with naturalistic, Japanese influenced themes.

Birds, Bugs and Cattails!

During the 1880's natural themes - animals, insects and plants - emerged as a common motif in Victorian design.   One catalyst for this return to nature was a growing appreciation of early woodblock prints, pottery and other fine arts from Japan.   The Japanese love of nature, abstraction of form and use of color had a profound impact on Victorian art and design.

This lovely late Victorian pendant watch, decorated with a floating butterfly and two birds precariously clinging to a swaying cattail, is a wonderful example of the influence of Japanese design on the jewelry of the period.   Dating from around 1890, the watch case is crafted in sterling silver and measures 1.375" in diameter.

The maker of the watch left his mark - a crescent moon and star - on the case, dust cover and movement.   The case is numbered "846735".   The hands are pin set and the movement is in running order, but in need of cleaning.   With all antique watches, we suggest that you first enjoy them as beautiful pieces of jewelry and only secondarily as accurate time pieces.

Cost:  Sold

Measurements:   This sterling pendant watch is 1.375" in diameter and the bail and crown add another 0.5" to the height.

The naturalistic theme is continued on the bezel of the watch face where a fly or bee eagerly approachs a life-like floral spray.   You can also see the white enamel dial with Roman numeral hours and a minutes chapter.

If you enjoy examples of late Victoian jewels in the Japanese taste, please take a look at a gorgeous cloisonne belt buckle.   Or, examine the dramatic silver locket  that already got away.
