An 18 karat gold pendant set with Holly Chalcedony, Rutilated Quartz and Tsavorite Garnets.
This pendant features Holly Chalcedony, a rare purple variety of translucent crypto-crystalline Quartz. Because of its intense color Holly Chalcedony is highly prized by both jewelry designers and gemstone collectors. The Holly Chalcedony is securely held in an 18kt gold cap bezel with a satin finish. On top is a cushion-shaped Rutilated Quartz cabochon. The Rutilated Quartz is bezel set and appears to float within a bright-finish golden arch. Rutilated Quartz is a colorless Quartz (a.k.a. Rock Crystal Quartz) which contains delicate Rutile needles. The Rutile needles develop as the quartz crystal is forming and can be dark burnt-orange, copper colored or a golden yellow like the specimen in this pendant. Tsavorite Garnets accent each end of the golden arch. These exotic Garnets, from the Tsavo Park region of East Africa, are a vibrant bright green. |

This 3/4 view highlights the craftsmanship of our goldsmith. In particular, note the consistently smooth, finished edge of the bezel cap.
A nice feature of this pendant is its hidden, oversized bail. Because our goldsmith hid the bail behind the Rutilated Quartz cabochon, it does not interfere with the appearance of the pendant. When hung from a necklace, the pendant appears to be floating in mid-air. "Look mom...no hands!!!" The oversize bezel assures that this jewel will hang gracefully from both wide and delicate neck chains. |
| This side view highlights the thick bezel surrounding the cabochon Rutilated Quartz - no skimping here! From the front, the bezel has a light appearance, but as you can see here the bezel is constructed with a thick wall which securely holds and protects the cabochon gemstone. |

Of course, this pendant can be made in many combinations (We call them "flavors"!) of precious metals and gemstones. For precious metals you might consider white, yellow rose or even green-colored gold, 14kt or 18kt, and platinum.
Instead of Holly Chalcedony, the tongue-shaped drop could be Chrysoprase, Blue Chalcedony, Amethyst, Carnelian, Onyx, Rutilated or Tourmilated Quartz, or even Hematite. The cushion-shaped gemstone on top could be Tourmilated Quartz, Onyx, Amethyst, Lapis, Pink or Green Tourmaline, Malachite or whatever flavor of gemstone you prefer. Finally the round Tsavorites at the end of the golden arch can be just about any gemstone you desire .... either facetted or cut en cabochon. |
