The late Victorians were fascinated with a fantastic variety of mythical creatures: griffins, chimera, sea serpents, sphinxes and assorted monsters. The jewelers working in the Victorian and Art Nouveau styles drew from this menagerie of creatures.
Above is a wonderful Art Nouveau stickpin of a stylized serpent crafted in 14kt gold. The terrifying aspect of the serpent, the whiplash curve of its body, and the abstract nature of the design are all characteristic of Art Nouveau jewelry. Cost: Sold Measurements: This 14kt gold Art Nouveau stickpin measures 2.5 inches in length. The serpent is 0.625 inches wide and 0.5 inches in height. |

We believe this striking stickpin was created in the workshops of Bipart, Griscom & Osborne. Based in Newark, New Jersey, B. G. & O. was known for creating delicate enamel flowers and fantastic creatures during the Art Nouveau period. Their hallmark, a flaming torch, is similar to the somewhat blurred hallmark on the stickpin. |
