Basilsik and Pearl Stickpin

Alling basilisk and pearl stickpin. (J9025)

The Basilisk

A majestic basilisk tempts with a luminous white pearl.  Basilisks have the head and wings of an eagle or rooster and the body of a serpent.  They were known for their deathly stares and malodorous breath.  Beware of a basilisk offering a pearl.  Beautifully crafted in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

Alling & Company, the maker of this richly detailed jewel,  created imaginative stickpins, cufflinks and other fine jewels from 1843 to 1915.  The firm's jewels were sold by prominent jewelers of the day, including Tiffany & Company, Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Bigelow, Kennard in Boston.  The maker's mark for Alling & Co., a shamrock enclosing "14" and an "A", is stamped on the reverse of the griffin.

The stickpin is beautifully crafted.  The pin stem is secured to the solid back of the basilisk with a sturdy collet. (see photograph below)

Cost:  $345

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is  2 1/4" in length and weighs 1.1 grams.  The griffin is  1/2" tall and  7/16" wide.
