A fierce dragon with a fiery red eye and a
curling tail of flame-like acanthus leaves perches atop a finely
sculpted Art Nouveau stickpin created by Carter, Howe & Co.
in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
The jewelers of the Art Nouveau era created striking jewels embracing themes of beauty, fantasy and nature. Fantastic beasts - dragons, griffins and other chimera - where a particularly favored theme among jewelry makers and wearers of the period. This stickpin is beautifully crafted with a sturdy pin securely attached to the back. To the left of the pin stem is stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold and the maker's mark of Carter, Howe & Company (an arrowhead enclosing a small "C"). Carter, Howe was a maker of elegant stickpins and other fine jewels in the years around 1900. Cost: $425 |
