Sculptural Atlas Stickpin

Atlas stickpin. (J9475)

Pillars of Hercules

Atlas carries the weight of the world, or at least the heavens, on his shoulders framed by two pillars created by Hercules to ease the vanquished Titan's burden.  This finely sculpted stickpin was created in 14kt gold, circa 1920.

In Greek mythology Atlas was condemned by Zeus to hold up the sky through eternity after the Olympians defeated the Titans.  By some accounts Hercules later took pity on Atlas and built two pillars to ease his burden.  This stickpin is a beautiful rendition of the myth and an example of the early 20th/late 19th century interest in the architecture and myths of the classical world.

The stickpin is finely crafted with a sturdy pin stem and solid back.  The reverse beneath the pin is stamped with the maker's mark "HK&S" and "14K" for the purity of the gold.  (photo below)

Cost:  $485

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 1/2" long and the top measures just over 5/8" by 3/8".  It weighs 3.4 grams.
