Brassler Tourmaline Stickpin

Hans Brassler tourmaline stickpin. (J9395)

Brassler Tourmaline

A verdant green tourmaline framed by a golden laurel wreath capped with inward turning scrolls.  A wonderful example of Hans Brassler's elegantly imaginative interpretation of Neoclassical design.  Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1910.

During the early 20th century Hans Brassler created a wonderful collection of stickpins and other jewels that are miniature works of sculpture.  His creations included a menagerie of mythological beasts, flowing Art Nouveau fantasies, fin de siecle Neoclassicism and early precursors of Art Deco.

This stickpin is finely crafted with a strong gold pin stem and sturdy frame cradling the tourmaline.  The maker's mark of The Brassler Company, an oval surrounding "14B", is stamped on the upper left of the pin stem.  The design on the front is recreated in low relief on the back. (see photo below).

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 7/16" long and the top measures 1/2" tall by just under 7/16" wide.  It weighs 2.1 grams.

Hans Brassler was known for the originality and artistry of his jewelry designs.  Born in Germany,  he studied jewelry design at the Academie Julian in Paris and is reported to have earned a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.  He emigrated to the United States in 1902 and worked with Tiffany & Company for a period before founding his own firm, The Brassler Company, in 1909.  Brassler served as artistic director for about six years during which time he created an extraordinary collection of strikingly original jewels.  His daughter was the noted 20th century sculptor Margaret Brassler Kane.
