Carrington Full Dress SetWhite Tie |
During the Art Deco era Carrington &
Company created striking dress sets that combined the jazzy
spirit of age with a sense of understated elegance. This
finely crafted full set features brightly engraved platinum
borders and creamy white mother-of-pearl centers. An
elegant study in white and white in its original Tiffany &
Co. case. Crafted in platinum and 14kt gold circa
1930.
Complementing the cufflinks are four vest buttons and three shirt studs. The vest buttons and shirt studs repeat the platinum and mother-of-pearl design of the cufflinks. The vest buttons (one pictured above) are the same size as the cufflinks, 9/16" in diameter. The shirt studs (pictured below) are just over 5/16" in diameter and 1 1/4" long.
Carrington & Company was a maker of fine cufflinks and dress sets during the first half of the 20th century. The firm's gold and platinum jewels were often retailed by Tiffany & Co. (as was this dress set) and other carriage trade jewelers of the day. Carrington cufflinks and dress sets were renowned for elegant design, exquisite materials and uncompromising craftsmanship.
The reverse of the cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons are as beautifully crafted as the fronts. The backs are crafted in 14kt yellow gold and polished to a bright finish. (Please excuse the reflections from my camera.) Note the sturdy brackets and cross bars that secure the links on the cuff.
The maker's mark for Carrington & Company, a "C" surrounding "14", is visible on the backs. The reverse of the cufflinks and vest buttons are also marked "GOLD&PLAT" for the precious metals and "ALN", likely the initials of the gentleman who first owned this dress set. The reverse of shirts studs are marked "14K&PLAT".
Name: White Tie
This dress set was purchased at Tiffany &
Company during the 1920s or early 1930s. The set comes
with its original period case covered in dark blue leather and
lined with white silk. The inside of the lid is signed
"Tiffany & Co./New York/Paris London" and the underside of
the case just beneath the clasp is blind stamped
"Tiffany&Co.". Carrington & Company was a
significant maker of cufflinks and dress sets for Tiffany's
and other fine retail jewelers during the first half of the
20th century.
