Elegant Onyx and Pearl Dress SetPlatinum and Pearl Dress Set |
An elegant black onyx dress set with small
white pearls. The interplay of black and white is
accentuated by brilliant platinum borders that are engraved in
the Art Deco manner with alternating sections of concentric
curves and entwining scrolls. Created in platinum and
14kt gold, circa 1925. Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs and four vest buttons. The shirt studs and vest buttons repeat the sophisticated design of the cufflinks. The shirt studs (one pictured above) are 5/16" in diameter and 1" long. The vest buttons (one shown below) are just over 1/2" in diameter, the same size as the cufflinks. This dress set was created by Carter, Gough & Company, makers of fine gold and platinum jewelry during the early decades of the last century. The maker's mark for Carter, Gough, an arrowhead surrounding a small "C", is visible just to the right of the precious metal mark "14K - PLAT".
The backs of cufflinks should be just as well crafted as the fronts. The reverse of these cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons are beautifully crafted in 14kt yellow gold and polished to a mirror-like finish. Please excuse the dark reflections from my camera. Carter, Gough created cufflinks with a sturdy linkage of strong cross bars and brackets to assure that the cufflinks would remain securely on the cuff.
