Art Deco Onyx Dress SetBlack Tie |
Art Deco dress set with black onyx centers
surrounded by contrasting white gold borders engraved with
concentric circles. The understated elegance of the
simple, geometric design speaks to the best of the Art Deco
era. Created by Carter, Gough & Co. in 14kt white and
yellow gold, circa 1925.
Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs and four vest buttons. The shirt studs and vest buttons repeat the elegant design of the cufflinks. The shirt studs (pictured above) are 5/16" in diameter and 1" long. The vest buttons (one shown below) are just over 1/2" in diameter, the same size as the cufflinks.
This dress set was created by Carter, Gough, a maker of fine cufflinks and dress sets during the Art Deco era. Founded in the early 1840s, the jewelry firm was based in Newark, New Jersey and remained in operation until the early 1930s.
The dress set is very well crafted. The above photo of the reverse of the cufflinks illustrates the care taken by the maker. The cufflinks are secured on the cuff with sturdy brackets and strong cross bars. The backs are crafted in 14kt yellow gold and polished to a mirror-like finish. Similar care was taken in creating the shirt studs and vest buttons.
Each of the pieces is signed with the maker's mark of Carter, Gough & Co. The maker's mark, an arrowhead surrounding a small "C", is found just to the right of the "14K" gold purity mark.
