![]() Dolphin and Pearl Stickpin![]() Dolphin and Pearl |
A dolphin dramatically turns as if suddenly
attracted by a luminous pearl. The dolphin is finely
modeled with a wonderful expression, rich, textured scales and a
sinuous, twisting body. A small red gem (possibly a ruby
or pink sapphire) is set as the creatures eye. Created by
Carter, Howe & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
Carter, Howe (and its successor Carter, Gough) was a maker of beautiful brooches, stickpins and other fine jewels featuring fantastic and mythological creatures. Founded in 1841, the firm was based in Newark, New Jersey and remained in operation until the early 1930s. The Carter, Howe maker's mark (an arrowhead surrounding a "C") is stamped just beneath the sturdy pin stem to the right of the "14K" precious metal mark (see photo below). Cost: $575 Measurements: This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 3/8" long and weighs 2.4 grams. The dolphin measures 11/16" wide by 10/16" tall.
