Victorian Scarab Stickpin

Carter Scarab!

A Victorian stickpin of a golden scarab with soaring wings.  During the Victorian era there was a fascination with the arts and customs of ancient Egypt that often found expression in the jewels of the period.  In particular, winged scarabs were viewed as a symbol of rebirth and regeneration and often attributed amuletic powers.   This finely crafted, richly detailed example was created by Carter, Howe & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

Carter, Howe was one of the earliest jewelry manufacturers in the United States.  Founded in 1844, the firm created finely crafted gold and platinum jewels during the Victorian period and the early decades of the 20th century.  The maker's mark of Carter, Howe (a "C" inside an arrowhead) along with "14" for the purity of the gold are stamped on the side of the pin stem.

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is just over 2 3/8" long.  The golden scarab top is 11/16" long by  3/8" wide and the stickpin weighs 2.2 grams.

The Carter, Howe firm was known for the care and quality of its gold work.  This concern for craftsmanship can be seen in the fine details and finish of the front of the stickpin,  as well as the sturdy construction and strong pin stem on the back (pictured below).
