| A fierce chimera raises its wings and cries
from atop this elegant French stickpin. The menacing beast
is sure to scare off any evil spirits and other ill-wishers that
come to close. Created in 18kt gold, circa 1900.
Toward the close of the 19th century French jewelers created a golden menagerie of fantastic creatures and mythical beasts. This richly detailed chimera is a wonderful example of the work of the French fin de siecle jeweler/artists. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) illustrates the care and craftsmanship with which it was created. The French assay mark for 18kt gold (an eagle's head) and an indistinct maker's mark are stamped on opposite sides of the upper pin stem.
