Antique Heliotrope Cufflinks Bloodstone and Gold |
Heliotrope, more commonly known as
"bloodstone," is a beautiful variety of quartz with smouldering
red spots embedded in dark green jasper. Fine
examples, like the heliotropes set in these cufflinks,
have the appearance of fiery embers glowing in a dark bed of
ashes. These elegant cufflinks were created in 14kt gold
around 1910. The cufflinks are well crafted with sturdy gold frames supporting and protecting the heliotropes. Although these cufflinks are not signed, the design of the cross bars and brackets suggests that Carter, Gough & Co. may have been the maker. Carter, Gough created fine cufflinks and other jewels during the Victorian era into the early decades of the 20th century. The firm was based in Newark, New Jersey.
 One side of the cross bars is stamped with "14K" for the purity of the gold.
