Hawk's Eye Dress SetHawk's Eye |
An elegant tuxedo set with Hawk's Eyes set in
yellow gold. Hawk's Eye is a beautiful variety of quartz
with deep blue edges shading to a glowing, bluish-gray band, or
"cat's eye," across the middle. The color and shimmering
cat's eye effect (chatoyancy) of the Hawk's Eye plays elegantly
against the warm tones of the yellow gold. This dress set
was created by Larter & Sons in 14kt gold, circa 1950. This dress set consists of a pair of cufflinks and four complementing shirt studs (one pictured above). The tops of the shirt studs are 5/16" in diameter and the studs are 7/8" in length. The 14kt yellow gold backs of the cufflinks are well crafted and polished to a bright finish. The cufflinks are secured on the cuff by sturdy cross bars and strap brackets. The shirt studs are equally well crafted and designed.
The cross bars of the cufflinks are stamped with the maker's mark of Larter & Sons. The mark is the profile of a shirt stud patented by Halsey Larter in 1898 and popularized by Larter & Sons in the early 20th century. The opposite side of the cross bars are marked "14K" for the purity of the gold. Larter & Sons was founded in 1865 and made distinctive cufflinks and dress sets during the late Victorian era and well into the 20th century. The firm had sales offices in New York City and manufactured its jewelry across the Hudson River in New Jersey.
