Art Deco Hematite Cufflinks

Hematite and Gold

The spare style of the late Art Deco era created some of the most striking cufflinks of the 20th century.  This elegant pair features the beautiful dark, metallic gray of hematite paired with the rich, warm tones of yellow gold.  Created by Larter & Sons in 14kt gold circa 1930.

The backs of these cufflinks reveal the care and craftsmanship with which they were created.  You can see the maker's attention to detail in the sturdy brackets and strong cross bars that secure these links on the cuff.  These cufflinks are in fine condition only showing slight wear consistent with their use and age.  With a little care they will survive the next 100 years as well as they survived the last 100.

The cross bars of the cufflinks are stamped with the maker's mark of Larter & Sons surrounded by "14" and "K" for the purity of the gold.  The maker's mark is a side view of a shirt stud design patented by Halsey Larter in 1898 and popularized by Larter & Sons in the early 20th century.

Larter & Sons was founded in 1865 and made distinctive cufflinks and dress sets during the late Victorian era and well into the 20th century.  The firm had sales offices in New York City and manufactured its jewelry across the Hudson River in Newark, New Jersey.
