Elegant Antique Diamond RingAntique Elegance! |
A richly detailed antique ring featuring a 1.08 carat Old European cut diamond. This distinctive ring is beautifully crafted in 18kt white gold. The shoulders of the ring are richly chased and engraved with life-like flowers and vines. The floral pattern is continued along the sides of the ring and accented with milgraining along the edges. The Old European cut diamond is set in a crown-like setting with eight spire-like prongs.
This wonderful antique ring may capture several generations of love, life and commitment. The solitaire diamond is an Old European cut that dates from the period around 1900. The 18kt white gold ring was made a generation later, during the 1920s or early 1930s. (Jewelry Clue: White gold was not commercially used in jewelry before 1915. Any jewel crafted in white gold is later than this date.) In antique rings, you often find older diamonds and gemstones that were reset in new settings as jewels were passed from one generation to the next. Perhaps a grandmother or mother passed this diamond on to her daughter to celebrate an engagement or other important event during the 1920s! |
All jewels, whether antique or modern, should be examined as closely from the underside as they are from the top. Viewing the inside shows why this ring has survived the past 80 years so well. Note the thickness of the walls supporting the mounting and shoulders of the ring and the sturdiness of the band. Although this jewel is delicate in appearance, it was crafted to last at least several more generations! |
The solitaire diamond is a wonderful example of an Old European cut. This style of diamond was common during the period 1890 to 1920. The beautiful symmetry and crispness of the faceting are not commonly found in older cut diamonds. The high, small table facet at the top of the diamond and the relatively large culet at the rear of the stone are both characteristic of Old European cuts. In a modern brilliant-cut diamond the table will be lower and larger while, the culet, if any, will be smaller. |
