Art Deco Diamond Stickpin

Art Deco diamond in sapphire stickpin. (SP9558)

Diamond-in-Sapphire

An elegant stickpin custom created with a bright Old European-cut diamond set in the center of a torus-cut, man-made sapphire.  The sapphire and diamond are set in platinum bezels with finely millegrained edges.  Crafted in 14kt gold and platinum, circa 1920.

The diamond weighs approximately 1/3 of a carat, perhaps a little more,  The Old European cut was  favored in the decades around 1900.  The man-made sapphire is cut as a torus, essentially a donut with an open center.  The sapphire is a translucent, elegant blue that beautifully complements the sparkle of the diamond.

This stickpin was finely crafted with an open back and sturdy struts bridging the outer and inner bezels (see photo below).

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This gold and platinum stickpin is 2 7/8" long and weighs 1.8 grams.  The platinum top is 3/8" in diameter.

The Art Deco Era and Man-made Sapphires

The decades around 1900 were an exciting period of innovation and change in the  jewelry trades.  One of the more lasting innovations was the discovery of methods for creating sapphires in a laboratory.  These man-made sapphires offered gem cutters an opportunity to fashion gemstones into unusual shapes like the torus cut.  Although the new man-made sapphires took several decades to catch on, by the Jazz Age of the 1920s the imaginatively cut gemstones were viewed as fashionably modern and found a home in the platinum and gold jewelry of the era.
