A Velvety Violet Blue Benitoite![]() 0.91 carat Bird's Eye Brilliant-cut Benitoite |
| Benitoite is a rare gemstone found solely in a
small region of the San Benito County in California. It has a
Barium Titanium Silicate composition and is generally found in
only small sizes. When first discovered in 1907 it was
originally thought to be Sapphire, however, experts soon
realized it was a new discovery and named it for the region in
California. Extra fine grade Benitoite over 1/2 carat is rare. Quality gems over 1 carat are very rare, and those over 2 carats are extremely rare. Extra Fine grade Benitoite should have a deep violet-blue hue and minimal inclusions. In 1985, this incredible gem was designated as the official state gemstone for California. The scarcity of this striking gemstone makes it a true collectors piece. This 0.91 carat Benitoite is faceted with a bird's eye shape and is of extra fine quality. The color is a rich Violetish Blue and of excellent clarity. A notable feature of Benitoite is it's high dispersion effect which is also known as fire. This is the ability to take white light and disperse it into the various components of the visible spectrum. It also has a very high luster that makes this gem truly exceptional. It ranks a 6 to 6.5 on the Moh's Scale of Hardness and therefore is best suited for pendants and earrings. If you prefer a ring, we recommend setting it recessed within a sturdy bezel or collet to provide protection. |
