Hans Brassler Star Brooch

Hans Brassler star brooch. (J9329)

Radiant Star!

The pointed rays of a star accented with small white pearls and centered with a rich purple amethyst.  Between the rays are golden fleurs de lys set with a trinity of small pearls and gold beads.  A radiant pendant-brooch created by Hans Brassler in 14kt gold in the early years of the last century, circa 1910.

The reverse of the brooch is as beautifully crafted as the front.  The gold back is closed to give strength to the design and protect the small pearls.  A sturdy pin stem and early safety clasp help secure the jewel on a jacket lapel,  blouse or hat.  Above the pin stem a hinged bale allows the piece to be suspended from a small chain and worn as a pendant.

For several years in the early 1900s,  Hans Brassler created small jewels that were among the finest of the period.  He studied jewelry design and gold work in his native Germany and Paris prior to emigrating to the United States in 1902.  Initially he worked as a freelance jewelry designer and with Tiffany & Co. before opening his own firm, The Brassler Company, in 1909.  During his time with the company (1909 to about 1915) he created a small collection of jewels of extraordinary beauty and imagination.

The maker's mark of The Brassler Company ("14B" inside a double oval)
is stamped on the top of the safety clasp.
