Art Moderne Tuxedo SetAbalone and Platinum |
Dark abalone shimmers with flashes of red and
green amid the cool brilliance of platinum. This elegant
tuxedo set was created by Carrington & Co. in the striking
Art Moderne style of the late 1930s and retailed
by Tiffany & Co. Crafted in platinum and 14kt gold,
circa 1935.
Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs with abalone and platinum tops. The studs are a little over 5/16" in diameter and just under 1 1/4" in length. The stems employ a spring-loaded mechanism invented in the late 1890s.
The backs of the cufflinks and shirt studs are beautifully crafted in 14kt gold and polished to a bright finish (please excuse the shadowy reflections of the camera). Note the sturdy cross bars and strong brackets that secure the cufflinks on the cuff. Carrington employed the same level of care and craftsmanship in creating the backs of cufflinks and studs as it did the fronts.
This tuxedo set was retailed by Tiffany & Co. The reverse of the cufflinks are stamped with the shop mark of the luxury retailer. The backs are also stamped "14K & PLAT" for the purity of the precious metals.
The understated elegance of these cufflinks, use of fine materials and style of the linkage identify Carrington & Co. the maker. During the first half of the 20th century Carrington & Company was one of the preeminent makers of fine dress sets and cufflinks. The firm's gold and platinum jewels were retailed by Tiffany & Co. and other carriage trade jewelers of the day.
