Egyptian Revival Scarab Stickpin Carter Scarab |
| A beautifully modeled winged scarab with small
pink eyes (likely pink sapphires) set atop a finely crafted
stickpin created by Carter, Gough in 14kt gold circa 1910.
During the late Victorian era and early 20th century there was a strong interest in the arts and artifacts of ancient Egypt. This enthusiasm found expression in the jewelry of the period which often incorporated winged scarabs, sphinxes and other, real and imagined, pharonic motifs from the distant past. This stickpin is a finely designed and crafted example. The stickpin is well constructed with a stout pin stem anchored to the back of the scarab with a sturdy collet (see photo below). The reverse of the scarab is engraved with the initials of the original giver and recipient of the stickpin ("GAD - JG") and the likely date the jewel was given ("3-29-13").

 Carter, Gough & Co. was a maker of fine stickpins and other jewels during the Victorian era and the early decades of the 20th century. Founded in 1844 the firm was known for the elegance of its designs and the quality of its craftsmanship. The maker's mark of Carter, Gough (a small "c" inside an arrowhead) is stamped on the upper left side of the pin stem along with "14" for the purity of the gold. |
