Edwardian Sapphire Brooch

Edwardian brooch with sapphire and pearls. (J9510)

Edwardian Sparkle

A beautifully enameled  bar pin set with a blue sapphire and two pearls at the ends.  This jewel sparkles with the elegance and color of the Edwardian era.  Created by Carter, Howe & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1910.

The level of detail in the enamel and gold work is exquisite.  The gold beneath the blue enamel is engraved with a feathery pattern that gives the enamel a shimmering iridescence,  while the surrounding creamy white enamel is accented with yellow gold curlicues and stylized floral designs.

The ends of the bar pin are similarly finely detailed with floral or heart motifs accented with black enamel and small pearls set in the angled terminals.

The reverse of this brooch is crafted with the same care and skill as the front.  Note the sturdy walls of the gallery which frames the piece and protects the sapphire and enamel work.  This brooch was created in an era when exacting care was taken in every step of creating a jewel.

Close-up of Carter, Howe maker's mark. (J9510)

This sparkling jewel was created by Carter, Howe & Co., a maker of beautiful small brooches, elegant stickpins and other fine jewels during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm's mark - an arrowhead surrounding a small "C" - is stamped on the top of the clasp.  Beneath the maker's mark the purity of the gold ("14K") is stamped.
