Fiery Carnelian

An elegant tuxedo set with smoldering red carnelians in yellow gold.  The fiery heat of the gemstones plays beautifully against the warm tones of the settings.  Finely crafted by Day, Clark & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

Carnelian is a fine-grained variety of quartz which in ancient times was believed to increase a wearer's strength and courage.  Among the ancient Egyptians the stone was likened to the last fiery rays of a setting sun.  More recently, in the early 20th century and the Art Deco era the gemstone was a favorite because of its intense fiery color and shimmering luminous quality.

Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs set with carnelian cabochons.  Carnelian is a bewitching variety of chalcedony known for its ruddy, red hues.  The finer examples glow with the heat of fiery embers.  Carnelian was a favorite gemstone for gentleman's jewelry during the late 19th and early 20th century.

The backs of the cufflinks and shirt studs are well crafted in 14kt gold.  Sturdy strap brackets and strong cross bars secure the cufflinks on the cuff.  The shirt studs are anchored with sturdy circular bases.

The backs of the cufflinks and shirt studs are stamped with "14" for the purity of the gold.  Several of the shirt studs are also signed with the maker's mark of Day, Clark & Company  - the profile of small barbell-style cufflink.  Day, Clark was a maker of elegant cufflinks, dress sets and other jewels active from 1877 until about 1940.
