French Dragon Stickpin

French Art Nouveau dragon stickpin. (S9485)

French Chimera

A fierce dragon roars as if readying to lunge forward and exhale fire from within a leafy tangle of vines.  This elegant French stickpin is ready to do battle with any malefactors or evil spirits that come too close to the wearer's lapel.  Created in 18kt gold, circa 1900.

Toward the close of the 19th century French jewelers created a golden menagerie of fantastic creatures and mythical beasts.  This finely rendered stickpin is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of these artist jewelers.

The solid back of the stickpin (pictured below) is as carefully finished as the front.  The French assay mark for 18kt gold (an eagle's head in profile) is just visible on the left side of the upper pin stem and an indistinct maker's mark is stamped on the opposite side.

Cost:  $525

Measurements:  This 18kt gold stickpin is 2 3/8" long and weighs 2.1 grams.  The fierce chimera is just under 1/2" in diameter.
