Elegant Egyptian Revival Brooch

Krementz Egyptian Revival brooch. (BR9657)

Lotus Blossoms and Citrine

A dramatic Egyptian Revival brooch with a glowing ember-like citrine set between finely detailed lotus blossoms and palmettes.  Small pearls accenting the citrine add a touch of luminous elegance to this jewel fit for a pharaoh. Created by Krementz & Co. in 14kt gold circa 1900.

The beauty of the design is matched by the care with which the brooch was crafted.  Note, on the reverse, the crisp precision of the intricate goldwork and the sturdiness of the collet setting holding the citrine.  Above the reddish orange citrine a collapsible bail allows the brooch to be worn as a pendant, while bellow there is a chatelaine hook from which a small watch or jewel can be suspended.  Finally, a strong pin stem and "C" clasp secure the brooch when worn.

The top of the clasp is stamped with the maker's mark of Krementz & Company and "14K" for the purity of the gold.  The maker's mark (pictured) is a collar button in profile, sometimes referred to as the "two handled umbrella" or "nose and moustache."  Krementz & Co. was founded by George Krementz shortly after the Civil War and created finely designed, beautifully crafted brooches, stickpins and other jewels for much of the 20th century.

A Brief Note about Krementz & Company

What the Bachs were to music and the Bernoullis to mathematics, the Krementz family was to jewelry design and manufacturing in the United States during the past two centuries.  When George Krementz founded his namesake firm in 1866 he began a jewelry dynasty that over the years was a creative force in everything from costume jewelry to tiaras, colored gemstones to rich enamels, and, of course, brooches, cufflinks and stickpins. The firm was especially renowned for the elegant jewelry it created during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras.
