Art Deco Sapphire and Diamond Brooch

Sapphire and Diamonds

An Art Deco brooch set with a bright blue sapphire and two sparkling diamonds amid an intricate lattice of white gold filigree and flower heads.  This shimmering jewel was created by Krementz & Co. in 14kt white and yellow gold, circa 1925.

The precision and detail of the filigree work is mesmerizing.  Elongated brooches with fine tracery first found popularity in the Edwardian period (circa 1900 - 1915).  Such jewels were sometimes described as "lace crafted in platinum and gold."  This brooch dates from around 1920 and  reflects the influence of traditional Chinese fretwork on Art Deco design.  The Art Deco era was eclectic and far ranging in its sources of inspiration.

The beauty of this brooch was matched by the care with which it was crafted.  Note the crispness of the back of the cut-out work and the sturdy collet settings which secure the gemstones.  On a lapel or shoulder this jewel is secured with a strong pin stem and early safety clasp.  A bridge supports the long pin stem at the center.

The top of the clasp is stamped with the maker's mark of Krementz & Company (a stylized collar button) above the precious metal mark "14K".  Krementz was founded shortly after the Civil War and created finely designed and crafted brooches, cufflinks and other jewels through much of the 20th century.
