Wyvern Stickpin by Riker Bros.

Riker Bros. wyvern stickpin. (SP8404)

Fierce Wyvern

A fierce wyvern with a fiery ruby eye clutches a faceted red gemstone.  This elegant,  late Victorian stickpin was created by Riker Brothers in 14kt gold circa 1890.

Wyverns, along with griffins, dragons and other fantastic creatures, were a favorite among jewelry maker's and lovers in the years around 1900.  Wyverns were believed to have the wings and talons of a raptor and the menacing tail of a serpent. The tip of the tail was said to be venomous.  Needless to say wyverns did not make good house pets!

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This elegant stickpin is  2 9/16" long and weighs 1.6 grams.  The wyvern is  5/8" tall and just over  3/8" wide.

The finely detailed wyvern is solidly crafted in gold (see photo below) and the stickpins securely held in place when worn by a sturdy pin stem.  It is a jewel that will survive the next 100 years as beautifully as it has the last 120.

Riker Brothers Jewelry

The upper left of the back of the wyvern is stamped with the maker's mark of Riker Brothers - an "R" above the curved blade of a saber - and "14K" for the purity of the gold.  Riker Brothers was a fine jewelry maker founded by William Riker in 1846The firm was a leading maker of fine gold jewelry during the late Victorian era and first half of the 20th century.  In the years around 1900, Riker Brothers was known for its bestiary of fantastic creatures crafted in 14kt gold.
