Sea Demon Stickpin
|
A fierce demon with a distinctly amphibious look
snarls with sharp, menacing fangs. A small sea-blue sapphire is
set as the creature's eye and pearls decorate the fin-like
protrusions on the top and back of its head. This finely
detailed stickpin was crafted in 14kt gold in the years around
1900.
Late Victorian and Art Nouveau jewelers had a thing for fantastic creatures. A golden menagerie of griffins, sea monsters, dragons, demons, serpents and countless other chimera populated the jewels of the era. This stickpin is an especially fine example. The reverse of the stickpin is as finely crafted as the front (see photo below). Note the solid back and the sturdy collet which anchors the pin stem. Just beneath the collet the stickpin is stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold. The gold mark is partially obscured by the pin stem. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
