Sea Demon Stickpin

Sea devil stickpin with sapphire and pearls. (J9491)

Sea Devil

A fierce devil with a distinctly amphibious look - note the fin-like protrusions from the top and back of its head - snarls with menacing fangs.  A small sea-blue sapphire is set as the creature's eye and pearls decorate its fins.  This finely crafted stickpin was created in 14kt gold in the years around 1900.

Late Victorian jewelers had a thing for exotic creatures, both real and imagined.  They populated a golden menagerie of griffins, sea monsters, griffins, dragons, devils, deadly serpents and countless other chimera.  The fascination with the fantastic continued with the Art Nouveau style of the 1890s and early 1900s.  This stickpin is an especially fine example from the period.

The reverse of the stickpin is as finely crafted as the front (see photo below).  Note the solid back and the sturdy collet which anchors the pin stem.  Just beneath the collet the stickpin is stamped "14K"  for the purity of the gold.  The mark is partially obscured by the pin stem.

Cost:  $565

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 5/8" long and weighs 1.9 grams.  The demon is  5/8" tall and  1/2" wide.
