Late Victorian Sapphire Cufflinks
Sapphires and Scrolls
| Elegant, flowing scrolls frame rich blue
sapphires set in gently raised gold centers. The depth and
detail of the gold work is a testament to the artistry of
goldsmiths during the Victorian period. Victorian jewelers
had a way of working with gold that allowed them to create
finely detailed, flowing designs while maintaining a sense of
the precious metal's mass and solidity. Crafted in 14kt
gold, circa 1890.
These cufflinks are as finely crafted as they are beautiful. The solid gold backs are polished to a smooth finish with gently rounded edges. Sturdy lemniscate cross bars (elongated figure eights) and loop brackets help protect the sapphires and secure the cufflinks on the cuff.
During the Victorian era fine cufflinks were purchased as family heirlooms meant to be passed down from one generation to the next. This finely crafted pair will likely survive its next 100 years as beautifully as it did its first.
