Egyptian Revival StickpinWinged Scarab! |
Soaring golden wings surround a scarab carved in dark spinach-green Jade. The winged beetle rests atop a stylized lotus blossom. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1925.
The arts and objects of ancient Egypt have long inspired jewelry makers. Most recently the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 sparked a fashion for Art Deco jewels in an Egyptian theme. This stickpin is a striking example. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as nicely crafted as the front. A small plaque at the base of the reverse displays the maker's mark of Hayden W. Wheeler & Company Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
This stick pin was created by Hayden W. Wheeler & Company, a maker of fine jewelry and watch cases based in New York. Founded in the early 1850s, the firm created elegant stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels until the early 1930s. Hayden W. Wheeler's maker's mark is a large "W" enclosing a smaller "H" and "W". A "14" and "K", the precious metal mark, brackets the larger "W".
