Fierce Chimera StickpinWinged Lion |
With the head of a lion, wings of
an eagle and sinuous, twisting body of a serpent this fantastic
creature curls around a small luminous pearl. A Victorian
stickpin created in 14kt gold, circa 1890.
The chimera was created by Alling & Company, a maker of fine stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels during the Victorian era and early years of the 20th century. The firm's jewels were sold by the carriage-trade jewelers of the day - Tiffany & Co., Starr & Marcus and other luxury retailers. The Alling & Company maker's mark, a three-leaf clover with "14" and "A" stamped in the petals is found on the reverse of the lion-serpent. The stickpin is beautifully crafted with a sturdy gold pin stem and solid gold back (see photo below). Cost: $375
