Carrington Amethyst Cufflinks
|Regal purple amethysts set in brightly polished
yellow gold. These elegant cufflinks may be of service to
an avid oenophile or occasional tippler. The ancient
Greeks believed wearing amethyst would protect the wearer from
intoxication and any subsequent hang over! Created by
Carrington & Co. 14kt gold, circa 1900.
The reverse of the cufflinks is as well crafted as the fronts. Note the closed gold backs which protect the amethysts and the smooth, rounded edges of the bezel settings. Sturdy cross links and loop brackets secure the cufflinks on the cuff.
The maker's mark of Carrington & Company (a squared "C" enclosing "14") is stamped on the reverse of the cufflinks. Carrington was a maker of fine cufflinks during the first half of the 20th century. The firm was known for its elegant, understated designs and created cufflinks and dress sets for Tiffany & Co. and other carriage-trade jewelers of the day.
