Optical Art Deco Cufflinks

Huger optical art cufflinks. (J9302)

Op Art!

Finely engraved concentric circles create the illusion of either a tall mountain of stacked circular terraces or a tunnel infinitely regressing into the distance.  If you stare at the photograph long enough the illusion will appear to reverse itself.  Created by William Huger & Co. in 14kt gold,  circa 1930.

In the late 1920s and 1930s an interest in optical illusions and kinetic graphic designs anticipated the Optical Art movement of the 1960s.  Several cufflink makers of the period created striking, distinctly modern cufflinks incorporating these mesmerizing designs.

The reverse of the cufflinks is as well crafted as the fronts with sturdy cross bars and brackets to secure the links on the cuff.  Also, note the maker's attention to detail in the the crisp, finished edges and the smooth polished surfaces of the gold.  Attention to small details was a hallmark of fine cufflinks maker's in the early 20th century.

These striking cufflinks were created by William Huger & Company, a maker of fine cufflinks and other jewels during the early decades of the 20th century.  The firm is known for its elegant designs during the Art Deco period.  The maker's mark of William Huger & Co. (an "H" squeezed in the middle) is visible on the reverse of the cufflinks just to the right of the precious metal mark ("14").
