Cufflinks for the Avid Angler
| Fish energetically fighting the line paired
with finely detailed lures. These sportsman's (or
-woman's) cufflinks feature beautifully carved reverse
intaglios. Created by Sloan & Company in 14kt gold,
The reverse intaglios (aka Essex crystals) were created by a lapidary (gem carver) meticulously carving the fish and lures into the bases of polished domes of rock crystal (transparent quartz). Then using small brushes, some no bigger than a single horse hair, the artist added the fine details and colors. In a final step, the rock crystal domes were backed with mother-of-pearl to throw the detailed fish and lures into striking relief and give the image a luminous, back-lit glow.
The cufflinks were created with closed, solid backs to protect the reverse intaglios. On the cuff the cufflinks are secured with sturdy cross bars and elongated brackets. The tops of the cross bars are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold followed by the maker's mark of Sloan & Company, a small trident. Sloan was a maker of fine cufflinks and other jewels from the late 1800s to the mid 20th century.
