Spessartite, Diamonds and Demantoid
| A vibrant orange Spessartite Garnet glows like a tropical
sunset at the center of this custom ring. The Spessartite
is accented with brilliant diamonds and even a small Demantoid
Garnet. All are set in a beautifully handcrafted,
hand-engraved platinum ring.
The ring was custom created for a couple who wanted an imaginative, unique engagement ring to celebrate their betrothal. To create the ring I drew upon the talents of three exceptional artists - an innovative gem cutter, a master platinumsmith and a talented hand engraver. The result was a beautiful ring that exceeded even the clients' expectations.
The Spessartite Garnet was cut by a talented lapidary who strove to release the beauty and fiery brilliance of the gemstone. The design of the cut is known as a "Medicine Wheel".
The Medicine Wheel Spessartite is set in a platinum bezel that echoes the North-South-East-West orientation of the gem. The openings in the bezel allow light to flow into the gemstone creating a dazzling play of light and color.
The body of the ring and bezel setting were crafted by a master platinumsmith. Working with the design I developed with the couple, the goal was to create a miniature work of art in platinum - a ring that would be the perfect fit for both the couple and the fiery Spessartite.
By custom creating the ring we were able to assure that the design was beautifully executed and the gemstones perfectly set. Note the handcrafted bezel setting that cradles the Spessartite Garnet, the clean, dramatic lines of the design and the depth of the band throughout its circumference.
Finally, the platinum sides of the ring were brought to life with the work of a talented hand engraver. Using a technique of engraving known as "bright cut," our engraver carefully incised crisp lines into the platinum, creating rich plume-like scrolls and four-petal flowers evocative of the romance of a bygone era.
The four-petal flowers are engraved on the upper shoulders of the band just beneath the bezel setting of the Spessartite. At the center of each flower we set a small brilliant diamond. When creating a ring we love to pay special attention to the small, hidden details.
Often our clients like to include symbols with special, sometimes secret, meanings in the design of their ring. Something with a personal meaning that may tell the story of how they met or express the uniqueness of their relationship.
At the base of the ring the couple chose to engrave two outward facing crescent moons centered by a sunflower-like blossom set with a vibrant Demantoid Garnet. Every ring should be as unique and special as the couple who will share it.
When we create a ring it is a collaboration between us, the client and craftsmen who execute the design. Each ring and couple is unique, so the craftsmen we choose to work with varies with the challenges and requirements of the design. Our goal is to assure that the beauty of the design is captured in the artistry and craftsmanship of the finish jewel.
When a ring is completed to our satisfaction we sign it with our registered hallmark ("BEL") for Bijoux Extraordinaire, Ltd. We also note the purity of the precious metals, in this case platinum ("90% PLAT 10% IRID"). These marks are your assurance of imaginative design, uncompromising craftsmanship and beautiful gemstones.
