|
A wonderful winged brooch from the Egyptian Revival of the 1920s. Crafted in warmly toned 14kt yellow gold, the sweeping wings of the brooch cradle a beautifully set garnet.
The ancient Egyptians believed that a winged disc or gemstone would protect the wearer from evil. With the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922, this and many other Egyptian-inspired motifs influenced jewelry design in the mid 1920s. Although we can not speak to the brooch's protective powers, we can assure that it is a wonderful example of Egyptian Revival jewelry. If nothing else, it is sure to lift a wearer's spirits.
Cost: Although this beautiful brooch has sold, you will find many more fine brooches in the Antique Brooch Gallery. |
![]() Bijoux's first rule for appreciating antique jewelry is to turn the piece over and inspect it from the rear. The back of our winged brooch shows the striking, crisp outline of the wings, the smooth, finished surface of the back, and the even sturdiness of the bezel securely holding the garnet. Obviously, the maker took the time to create a jewel that would show its quality from every direction. |
![]() From the side you can see the depth of the bezel protecting the garnet. The thickness (what jewelers call the gauge) of the wings allows for the wonderful sculptural detailing that gives the wings their sriking appearance. Also note the "C" clasp. Although characteristic of brooches from the Victorian period, "C" clasps are also common to revival jewelry that draws its inspiration and motifs from the past.
